Moderation on the rise?

🍸 Moderation is on the rise in the UK. But so is binge drinking.

A record 91% of UK drinkers now say they use at least one technique to moderate their alcohol consumption, from drink-free days to choosing low & no options.

At the same time, weekly binge drinking has risen from 11% to 13%, while the amount consumed during a typical drinking session has also increased.

The research, conducted by Drinkaware, also found that 39% of people are visiting pubs and bars less often than they were a year ago.

It’s an interesting contradiction and shows that the moderation trend isn’t necessarily as simple as people just drinking less. How often people drink and how much they consume when they do aren’t necessarily moving in the same direction.

For the drinks industry, it’s a useful reminder that there’s rarely one neat narrative when it comes to changing drinking habits.
