Sea change for beer? 🍺

Innovation in drinks can come from unexpected places and this week, it turns out, that place is the middle of the ocean.

The Drinks Business recently reported that MSC World Europa is brewing beer onboard using desalinated seawater, a move being described as a “world first”.

Through an onboard microbrewery, seawater is purified via osmosis into H2O before being used across the full brewing process, from milling through to fermentation and maturation.

The result? A range of beers (including a pilsner, wheat and bitter) brewed entirely at sea, and produced fresh every day.

This a clear example of drinks becoming part of the experience economy. The product isn’t just consumed, it’s contextualised. Drinking a beer brewed metres away, from the water surrounding you, adds a layer of story that goes far beyond the liquid itself.

It also taps into a broader industry shift towards visible production. From distilleries in bars to microbreweries in retail spaces, brands are increasingly bringing the “making” process closer to the consumer turning transparency into theatre.

And perhaps most importantly, it’s expanding the audience. In a crowded market, sometimes the biggest differentiator isn’t the product itself, it’s where (and how) you experience it.
